HC-SR04 Ultrasonic Distance Sensor
The HC-SR04 Ultrasonic Sensor is a versatile and compact module designed for precise non-contact distance measurement and object detection. Integrating an ultrasonic transmitter, receiver, and control circuit into a single unit, it operates on the principle of sonar—emitting sound waves to calculate the distance to an object, similar to how bats and dolphins navigate.
This module provides reliable performance with a detection range of 2 cm to 400 cm and an accuracy of approximately 3 mm. Because it uses sound rather than light, it remains effective in various lighting conditions where infrared sensors might struggle, making it a staple for robotics and automation.
The HC-SR04 features a simple interface with Trigger and Echo pins, allowing for seamless integration with microcontrollers like Arduino.
Note: The sensor operates at 5V. When using it with a Raspberry Pi, a voltage divider or level shifter is required to step down the 5V Echo signal to 3.3V to prevent damage to the Pi’s GPIO pins.
Key Features:
- Operating Voltage: 5V DC
- Detection Range: 2 cm – 400 cm (non-contact)
- High Precision: 0.3 cm resolution with ±3 mm accuracy
- Sensing Angle: <15 degrees
- Versatile Use: Ideal for obstacle avoidance, distance mapping, and DIY electronics
- User-Friendly: Simple 4-pin interface (VCC, Trig, Echo, GND)
